The Upcoming Elder Scrolls Online Blackwood Chapter is going to be released on PS4 & PS5 platforms, which is launching on June 8th and is bringing a new Companions System that will allow you to recruit a new combat ally to take on Tamriel.
How will the Companions System work in The Elder Scrolls Online?
This news comes via the official PlayStation blog. In the announcement post, ZeniMax content manager Dominic Davies details the new Companions System. The new Companions are designed to occupy player roles like tanking, healing, or dealing damage. They won't be as skilled or powerful as players, but they're intended to help lone wolves on quests and other content they don't want to tackle solo. Two companions will be available at launch: Bastian Hallix and Mirri Elendis. Both will have unique personalities and characteristics.
The new Companions System gives players two new companions to adventure around Tamriel. Both companions come with their own personalities; however, players will be able to customize how they look and fight. Players have complete control over their battle styles and the ability to change their gear and outfits. This lets players switch up both their companions look and give them better gear to help out against tough opponents. Companions will also slowly build up a relationship with players as they adventure, producing different consequences based on what direction players take the relationship.
An important aspect of the Companions System is the new rapport function. This new feature will allow you to know how your relationship with each companion is. They will have distinct personalities and what is acceptable for one, might be unforgivable for another. As you adventure with your Companion, the rapport level with your ally will fluctuate and building upon the relationship can unlock access to Companion-specific sidequests, new dialogue options, and even the ability to add them to your home as a houseguest.
While it’s obviously exciting to see the anticipated addition of a proper companion system to The Elder Scrolls Online, it is worth noting that NPC allies have always been a part of major TES releases from day one. Considering that ESO’s original release was seven years ago, it’s surprising that one of the franchise’s signature mechanics is arriving this late. Still, better late than never, as the addition of trusty allies will definitely make solo exploration of the game’s world a much more pleasurable activity.
