Useful Tips and Tricks for Beginners to Play Helldivers 2
Take Care of Environment
You've got big guns, you've got Stratagems, you've got reinforcements from teammates, but you've also got the environment to utilize. As you roam the map, you might find items you can pick up and throw, such as explosive tanks. Grab them and throw them to a prime position to take out as many enemies as possible. There are even artillery weapons that you get back online as part of side objectives during operations. These can be filled with missiles that can then be called in as a Stratagem wherever you are.
Target Low-tiered Enemies First
Take out any low-tiered enemies as soon as you enter enemy territory. These enemies have the highest spawn rate and are the smallest threat level to you. You can differentiate between the two factions by their attacks. Low-tiered enemies often have one way to attack you. These are either with melee attacks or single firearms. You must target these first to stop any breaches.
A bug or an Automaton breach are reinforcements. Enemies will either emerge from the ground or descend from above via an aircraft. Both factions have multiple opportunities to call in reinforcements. Keep an eye out for a red flare or red smoke around the low-tiered enemies, as this signifies that a breach is about to be activated.
Steady Your Aim
Your aim isn’t actually dictated by the dot in the center of your screen, it’s actually the circle that floats roughly around it. Weapons have different turn speeds and recoil, but your view point doesn’t change, only the aiming circle which indicates where your bullets are actually going. You’ll see that circle become much more unstable with heavier weapons and while you move, so stand still if you want the best accuracy possible.
Explore The Map
The fact that missions have a time limit means that new players will usually make a beeline straight for the main objectives, then extract as soon as possible. Doing so causes you to miss Areas of Interest, hidden locations that contain weapons, currency, and supplies. Areas of Interest are usually off the beaten path, so if you're part of a team it can help to spread out while traveling between objectives to maximize your chances of finding one.
Most maps also have at least one hidden Secondary Objective. Finding and completing it will earn more XP and Requisition Slips. The same goes for enemy outposts, shown in red on the minimap, but those are always visible so you can plan your routes to destroy or avoid them as the situation dictates.
Don’t Reload
Speaking of reloading, try not to reload your weapon. Unlike other third-person shooter games, a reload in Helldivers 2 doesn’t reuse the remaining ammo in your clip. Instead, the ammo will be simply discarded. So, if you value your resources, only reload once you have completely run out of ammo. However, with heavier weapons, you might want to make the hard choice since reloads take longer in this case. And you wouldn’t want to be caught with your pants down in the middle of battle.
Upgrade Your Ship Quickly
The previous Helldivers game relied on dropped weapons and upgrades to increase the power level of your Helldivers. However, this new game focuses much more on the ship. Upgrading your ship will increase the types of Stratagems you have available, as well as their power. Thus, upgrading your ship should be prioritized as much as possible.
To upgrade your ship's modules, or see what you'll need for the next level, go to the ship's computer. Here you can not only select your Stratagems for each mission, but you can examine your available weapons and your ship's modules. These upgrades are for your account only and will not affect other players in multiplayer. Instead, they get to keep their own upgrades.
