Since the release of WOW Classic, the subscription of World of Warcraft has doubled. That is really a good news for Blizzard. So, let's see it in details in this short article.
It is still early, but at this stage it seems like people who gamble on its durability will come out on top. Activision stated during the Q4 financial demonstration that World of Warcraft’s”active participant community” in the conclusion of 2019, described as gamers with yearly or more subscriptions, was double what it had been in the conclusion of the next quarter, less than two weeks ahead of the launching of Classic.
When WoW Classic launched in August 2019, servers quickly became crowded with players struggling to complete quests in the starter areas because enemies died almost as fast as they spawned. On top of that, performance issues arose due to lag. Players on some of the more civilized servers posted screenshots showing long, weirdly polite lines to kill quest mobs. Server queues for World of Warcraft Classic reached hours as Blizzard greatly underestimated the allure of this version of the game. Overall, WoW Classic has been an astounding success.
"We think about the WoW community as supporting both, even though Classic and Modern are very distinct experiences. And we're committed to continuing to support both of those experiences over the long term," said Brack. "Given the content updates for Modern WoW, and the cadence that we have for Classic, we exited our year with a subscriber base that was double what it was at the end of Q2. And we also see players remaining engaged in both versions of the game. "We launched Visions of N'zoth, which is a content patch for Modern WoW, in January. Engagement with Classic has been particularly strong in the East, and we see very high levels of player retention there."
"When we designed the model for World of Warcraft Classic, it was important that players have a single existing subscription to support both games. We think about the WoW community as supporting both, even though Classic and Modern are very distinct experiences. And we're committed to continuing to support both of those experiences over the long term," Blizzard president J. Allen Brack said during the Q&A call.
Both WoW and WoW Classic will continue to be supported by Blizzard under a single subscription, offering players distinct experiences and varying content. Only time will tell of WoW Classic will be able to retain these increased subscriber counts past its first year of availability. Will WoW Classic be a long term success or a short term nostalgia boost for Blizzard?
