What’s the Wayfinder?
Wayfinder is a shared-world game from Airship Syndicate with a strong focus on procedurally-generated dungeons, lots of crafting, and an engaging story. You'll set off on a journey either solo or with a group of friends to explore and help save the gorgeous but deadly world of Evenor. To do so, you'll take on the role of unique Wayfinders--a selection of individual characters that serve as the game's classes--each bringing their own utility to team compositions.
Each Wayfinder has its strengths and weaknesses--some bringing more defense or more damage based on their typical role in the group. Wayfinders like Wingrave or Senja will be good choices for those interested in providing their team with various protections or healing, while options such as Niss or Kyros will rip through enemies with precision and speed. Which Wayfinder you pick will define your solo capabilities as well as your place on the teams you join, so you'll want to think things through.
How to Choose the Best Starting Class in Wayfinder
In Wayfinder, you create an account and pick a class, and you’re stuck with that class until you unlock more later on. This might not sound bad for some players who are used to the grind and like jumping in blind, but for some people it might be a problem. You might pick a class that doesn’t ring well with you or is too hard for new players. So, what are the best starting class for the game?
There are 2 characters that I suggest you play with first. One is Wingrave, the closest the game gets to a Paladin class. The class has a good balance of offensive and defensive abilities as well as ways to protect and heal allies.
Another great character to try out is Kyros, a short-range mage character. He does have a melee weapon as a signature but also has some short-ranged spells. From spells that make enemies walking time bombs, to an AOE ultimate that deals a lot of damage, this one is for the DPS players out there.
Combat Guide in Wayfinder
The combat pacing will be similar to Darksiders games. It’s described by the developers as being on a spectrum of Dark Souls to Monster Hunter to Devil May Cry, it’s somewhere in the middle.
The game plays much closer to a 3rd person action game than a traditional MMO, for example there’s no tab targeting or a hot bar. Because it’s a character-based game the characters all feel different to play once they’re out in the world.
All characters can equip all weapon types further augmenting how you play. If you prefer the slower methodical method that rewards good doge timing and big crits, you can do that. If you prefer a faster paced action game where you’re dodging in an out of combat you can do that too.
Mixing and matching allows the gameplay to change and fundamentally feel like a different action game depending on your preferred playstyle.
Archetypes in Wayfinder
Every Wayfinder belongs a certain Archetype or group. The Archetype of a Wayfinder determines a set of passives that the Wayfinder will receive. You can see these passives by entering the character menu, default key of “C”, and selecting abilities.
At the bottom of the screen you will see two icons in the middle. Hovering over the icons will give you the full description of the archetype passives that your Wayfinder has. There are currently 3 archetypes that include the Warmaster, Arcanists, and Survivalists.
Warmasters are typically your traditional tanky or frontline class. Currently the 2 warmasters are Wingrave and Senja. Arcanists are the damage dealers. They include Kyross and Niss. The Survivalists are more of a support based class centered around controlling the battlefield. These currently include Silo and Venomess.
